Human chorionic gonadotropin is a heterodimeric glycoprotein hormone that shares its α-subunit with LH, FSH and TSH. Its β-subunit confers activity at the LH/hCG receptor, stimulating Leydig-cell steroidogenesis in the testis and supporting the corpus luteum.
hCG is a cornerstone of hypogonadotropic-hypogonadism research and treatment: gonadotropin therapy is the established approach to restoring spermatogenesis in that setting 1, and hCG is studied for preserving intratesticular testosterone and fertility in reproductive-age men 2.
