Adipotide (FTPP) is a proapoptotic peptidomimetic consisting of a homing motif (CKGGRAKDC) that binds prohibitin on white-fat blood vessels, linked to the membrane-disrupting sequence D(KLAKLAK)2. Binding triggers apoptosis of the targeted endothelial cells, reducing blood supply to adipose tissue.
In obese rhesus monkeys, four weeks of adipotide produced rapid weight loss and improved insulin resistance; body weight and abdominal fat decreased and the effects persisted after treatment ended 1. Reversible renal effects were observed and are a key parameter in ongoing research.
